Top 5 Issues Facing North Haven in 2025

As we look ahead to 2025, North Haven is poised for growth and change, but with that comes significant challenges. To ensure that our town remains a vibrant and inclusive place to live, we need to address these pressing issues head-on. Here is the North Haven DTC's list of the top five issues facing North Haven in 2025 and how we, as a community, can work together to solve them.

1. Rising Property Taxes

With property values increasing dramatically in recent years, many residents are concerned about how their tax bills will be affected. While property taxes fund essential services like education, public safety, and infrastructure, we must ensure that the burden is fair and sustainable. Check out the recent blog post about rising property values and the mill rate for more information.

The Path Forward:

  • Advocate for transparent and inclusive budget planning.

  • Push for policies that prioritize economic development to broaden the tax base.

  • Support revaluation education to help residents understand the process and how their taxes are calculated.

  • Share this blog post with friends so they can understand the process and the math.

2. Affordable Housing and Smart Development

North Haven’s housing market is becoming increasingly expensive, pricing out young families, first-time homebuyers, and retirees. Balancing growth with affordability is a key challenge.

The Path Forward:

  • Support zoning policies that encourage diverse housing options, including affordable units.

  • Promote mixed-use developments that bring housing, retail, and green spaces together.

  • Partner with developers and community groups to create housing solutions that meet the needs of all residents.

3. Supporting Public Education

Our schools are at the heart of what makes North Haven an attractive place to live, but rising costs and shifting priorities at the state level put pressure on local funding. Ensuring every child has access to a quality education is paramount.

The Path Forward:

  • Advocate for increased state funding for public education. North Haven receives a much lower proportionate amount of State funding for education when compared to our peers. Check out this blog post to learn more about it.

  • Support initiatives that prioritize mental health resources and student support services.

  • Come on out and give public comment at a Board of Education or Board of Finance meeting and let your representatives know what you'd like to see done differently.

4. Climate Resilience and Sustainability

As extreme weather events become more frequent, North Haven must invest in infrastructure and policies that protect our town and its natural resources. Addressing climate change locally is critical to our long-term health and prosperity.

The Path Forward:

  • Expand renewable energy programs and incentivize solar and energy-efficient upgrades for homes and businesses.

  • Develop comprehensive plans to address flooding, droughts, and other climate risks.

  • Commit to preserving open spaces and expanding tree-planting initiatives.

5. Equity and Inclusivity

North Haven thrives when all residents feel welcome, safe, and included. From LGBTQ+ rights to racial equity and access for individuals with disabilities, we must ensure our policies and practices reflect our values of fairness and inclusion.

The Path Forward:

  • Support anti-bullying programs in schools and the community.

  • Advocate for policies that protect marginalized communities.

  • Host regular forums to hear directly from residents about their concerns and ideas for fostering inclusivity.

What You Can Do

North Haven is strongest when its residents get involved and make their voices heard. Here are a few ways you can help tackle these issues:

  2. Contact Your Representatives: Let your local officials know what matters most to you.
