Public comment sessions are a crucial part of our democratic process, providing an opportunity for citizens like us to voice our opinions and concerns directly to decision-makers. As we approach the upcoming April 9th, 2024 Budget Public Hearing, we encourage everyone to consider stepping up and making their voices heard. Here's how you can do it:
1. Prepare Your Statement
Start by introducing yourself with your name and address. Then, dive into your comment, keeping it under 5 minutes. Remember, this is your chance to share your perspective, so speak from the heart. You might want to focus on a specific issue, such as funding for public schools, infrastructure, or community programs. Here is a sample statement provided by Amanda Gabriele, "Hi! My name is Amanda Gabriele. Renee Lane. I am here to talk about funding public schools. To me an my family, funding education is a top priority. My husband and I were lucky enough to attend excellent public schools that helped to set us up to be successful adults. We each had the benefit of having a wide variety of programming at our respective public schools, so we could explore topics prior to choosing a career and building a family. We want the same for our children and grandchildren. We both understand the challenges of budgeting and we don't relish the idea of paying additional taxes, but to us, an excellent school district is an imperative and a good value. I hope you will consider adding back $300k of the $1.2MM previously cut from the Board of Education budget request. Thank you."
2. Keep It Simple and Personal
There's no need to overcomplicate things or feel pressured to be perfect. Public comment is about sharing your unique experiences and viewpoints. Take inspiration from Amanda Gabriele's sample statement above—she highlights the importance of education based on her personal journey and family values.
3. Be Respectful and Concise
You don't have to be an expert or have all the answers. Simply express your thoughts respectfully and clearly. Remember, everyone's voice matters, regardless of how long they've lived in the community or their level of education.
4. Express Gratitude
Wrap up your comment by thanking the board or committee for the opportunity to speak. A simple "thank you" goes a long way in fostering constructive dialogue and mutual respect.
5. Practice Self-Compassion
Lastly, remember that public speaking can be nerve-wracking, but don't let fear hold you back. Embrace the courage to step out of your comfort zone and make a difference in your community.
By participating in the Budget Public Hearing, you're not only exercising your democratic rights but also contributing to the betterment of North Haven. Together, we can shape a brighter future for our town. See you at the hearing! 🗣️📢 #CommunityEngagement #NorthHaven #PublicComment
