Why Affordable Housing Matters for North Haven’s Future

Affordable housing is critical to maintaining a diverse, vibrant community in North Haven. It ensures that families, young professionals, and seniors can continue to live, work, and thrive in our town. By providing a range of housing options at different price points, we can create a more equitable community that supports both current residents and newcomers.

Yet, like many Connecticut communities, North Haven faces significant challenges when it comes to housing affordability. According to recent studies, Connecticut has some of the highest housing costs in the nation, with many residents spending more than 30% of their income on housing. In North Haven specifically, rising home prices over the past decade, coupled with limited affordable rental options, have made it increasingly difficult for people to remain in town. This affordability crisis not only affects low-income residents but also middle-class families, young adults just starting out, and seniors on fixed incomes.

Addressing this issue requires thoughtful planning and forward-thinking policies. Many Connecticut towns have made progress by adopting mixed-use zoning laws, which allow for a combination of residential, commercial, and retail spaces within the same development. This approach not only creates affordable housing options but also promotes walkable neighborhoods and reduces traffic congestion. For instance, in Branford, the Atlantic Wharf development successfully combined apartments, retail space, and offices, providing affordable living options while boosting the local economy.

North Haven could take steps by creating policies that prioritize housing diversity. For instance, revising zoning laws to allow for accessory dwelling units (ADUs), such as in-law apartments, could provide affordable options for seniors or young adults while allowing property owners to generate additional income. Another potential solution is partnering with nonprofit organizations or applying for grants to create affordable housing opportunities tailored to the needs of our community.

The North Haven Democratic Town Committee is dedicated to supporting smart housing policies that benefit all residents. Affordable housing doesn’t just help those in immediate need—it strengthens our entire community by fostering diversity, supporting local businesses, and ensuring that North Haven remains a place where everyone can thrive.

As we look to the future, we must work together to implement solutions that address this critical issue. Join us in advocating for affordable housing policies that reflect the values of equity, inclusion, and sustainability. Together, we can make sure everyone has a place to call home.
